Great Expectations:
Getting Dinner on the Table Every Night

(...um, cold cereal doesn't count.)

For many of us, just as we're ready to throw in the towel for the day we realize there's another hurdle to jump: getting dinner on the table. No easy feat when your children are bouncing off the walls, and you're thinking about joining them.

Desperation Dinners Cookbook
The cookbook "Desperation Dinners!" has been a lifesaver for hundreds of families, offering recipes that get dinner done in "20 minutes flat".

Desperation Dinners! gets 4.5 starts on Amazon.com with 84 ratings. I found a few cheap copies at half.com
(75 cents + s/h). Some libraries offer this book, so you can test a few recipes before you buy.

Teresa's Quick Tip

love thee heart

Ever have that kind of mommy day when you find yourself focusing, with laser precision, on the faults of everyone and everything around you? The usual targets being your messy house, your messy kids, and, perhaps, your (messy?) husband.

Sometimes it's so easy to head down that slippery slope; but, it never leads anywhere good. Really.

The alternative? Focus on the good stuff. Like what? Find something specific you love about your spouse, your child(ren), and other people and objects that tend to trigger your mental tirade.

. . . the creamy softness of your child's skin;

. . . your child's innate ability to love you, want you, need you (no matter how many times you think you've messed up);

. . . ten little toes that reflexively curl when you touch them;

. . .the inimitable peace and purpose that comes from holding your sleeping newborn on your chest. (How can you tell I no longer have infants in my home? Let's move on.)

. . . the way your husband looks in his _______ (fill in the blank with jeans, business suit, birthday suit, whatever.)

. . . the fact your that guy's thighs are bigger than yours.

. . . it's much easier to tolerate your family 24/7, than say, Jillian the trainer from h _ _ _, on The Biggest Loser television show.

. . . you have indoor plumbing.

Okay, get the idea? Find something positive to deter you from the negative.

Love has nothing to do with what you are expecting to get, it's what you are expected to give -- which is everything.  ~ Anonymous

February...Valentines Day...when we're expected (I mean, get to) ooze love over practically everyone we know. Our spouses, our children, our children's teachers, our pets, our parents...Did I forget anyone?

Raising children, running a household, and keeping it altogether can be exhausting. And then, ready or not, Valentine's comes around. (Who created this "holiday" anyway? Shouldn't moms be exempt from giving? We "love" everyday!)

So, to help you through this month of extracurricular Love, I've put together some ideas for you to bless (and love) your family, even on those least lovely of days.

Giving Hearts of Love

A fun Valentines Day game that speaks love into the hearts of your children, your guy or other special people in your life.

Get a handful of paper hearts approximately 3" to 4" wide. You can cut them from construction paper, use heart-shaped paper doilies or even the foamie hearts: all of these supplies are readily available at your local crafts store. Whatever heart option you choose, just be sure it's a texture you can write on.

red heartFor your children: On each heart write one special thing you love about your child and hide them throughout the house (maybe stick with just one room if your children are young). Then watch your little ones scurry about to find their special treasures. If you have more than one child, avoid confusion by using one color for each child. It's also helpful to remember how many hearts you've hidden.

Once all the hearts are found get cuddly-cozy and read all their little love notes one by one.

red heartFor Your Guy: You can also hide some hearts of love for your special man to find throughout the days leading up to Valentine's Day. Hide them in his clothing pockets, his car, his wallet, taped to the bathroom mirror, in his closet.

There are plenty of options for creating his love notes: you can write something you love about him on each heart, or you can spice it up a bit and write something about how you're going to love him when Valentine's Day finally arrives. If you choose this option, I wouldn't be surprised if he wants you to make good on your love note earlier, rather than later.

red heartFor Special Others: Have a friend or co-worker you'd like to encourage? Write a compliment, a favorite Bible scripture or other words of wisdom, including some of your favorite quotes - one on each heart. Then punch a single hole in each heart, at the top or on the side, and bind them together with a ribbon or key ring. You'll have a little gift booklet to brighten up the day for someone who's extra special to you.

What's Not to Love
About Your Community Library?

Local libraries are wonderful, especially for families with young children. They offer engaging story times and other special programs for kids, plus you have free access to a gazillion things: books, magazines, music CDs, kid's books on tape, DVDs,  downloadable and standard audiobooks, e-books and so much more!

love my libraryI know, I know, it's hard to drag all the kids to the library and concentrate on finding everything -- or, anything you want -- without distraction. There's an easy solution: go online to browse through the catalog and place a hold on the items you want to check out. When the item is available at the branch of your choice, you'll be notified by email or phone (whatever your preference).

See below for check out limits by library system. Each library system places limits on DVD and CD rentals (usually 5 or 10). Click on the library name for more information.

Alameda County Library: 95 items
Contra Costa County Library:  100 items
Marin County Free Library: 50 books,
Sacramento Public Library: 30 items
Santa Clara County Library: 100 items
Stanislaus County Library:  unlimited books (wow!)
Stockton-San Joaquin County Library: 25 items

The only unlovely thing about the library, is that state budget woes means shorter library hours. Be sure to check the hours for your local branch before beginning your quest to enlightenment.

May your hearts and homes be filled with love and laughter during this month of Love.

Warm Regards,

Teresa
